Aedista didn't just advise, they built the system alongside us. They understood our operations, made the complex parts simple, and delivered something our teams actually use every day. The result was immediate and, more importantly, built to last.

Frequently asked questions

Two colleagues in conversation across a sunlit table, one listening while the other explains
Why should I migrate from Dynamics GP to Business Central now?
Microsoft has shifted its investment entirely to Dynamics 365 Business Central and is no longer adding new features to Dynamics GP. While Microsoft continues to provide security updates and tax table updates for GP, the platform receives no functional enhancements. The GP talent pool is shrinking as developers and consultants move to Business Central, making it increasingly expensive to find qualified support. Organizations on GP also miss out on cloud-native capabilities including AI-powered cash flow forecasting, mobile access, Teams integration, Power BI embedded analytics, and the AppSource marketplace with thousands of extensions. The longer you wait to migrate, the wider the capability gap becomes and the more expensive the transition.
How long does a GP to Business Central migration typically take?
A GP to Business Central migration typically takes 4 to 8 months from project kickoff to go-live. The timeline depends on several factors: the number of GP modules in use, the volume and complexity of historical data being migrated, the number of customizations and integrations that need to be recreated or replaced, and the level of process re-engineering desired. Simpler migrations using Microsoft's Cloud Migration Tool with standard GP configurations can complete in 3 to 4 months. Complex migrations involving heavily customized GP environments, multiple integrations, and significant data cleansing may take 8 to 12 months. Aedista uses a four-phase methodology covering analysis, execution, validation, and training to ensure a structured and predictable timeline.
How does data migration work when moving from GP to Business Central?
Data migration from GP to Business Central can follow one of two paths. The first is Microsoft's Cloud Migration Tool, which directly transfers master records, open transactions, and historical data from GP (version 2015 or later on SQL Server 2012+) into Business Central. The second is a clean implementation approach where master records and opening balances are imported into a fresh Business Central environment. Both approaches migrate chart of accounts, customer and vendor master data, inventory items, bank reconciliation records, open purchase and sales orders, and historical transactions. Aedista performs data validation at every stage, running reconciliation reports to ensure financial data matches between GP and Business Central before cutover.
What happens to my GP customizations during migration?
GP customizations built with Dexterity, VBA, or third-party ISV products do not transfer directly to Business Central because the two platforms use fundamentally different architectures. During the analysis phase, Aedista reviews every customization to determine the best path forward: some customizations map to standard Business Central features that did not exist in GP, others can be replaced by AppSource extensions from Microsoft's marketplace, and truly unique business logic is rebuilt as AL extensions in the modern Business Central framework. In many cases, organizations find that 40 to 60 percent of their GP customizations are no longer needed because Business Central includes the functionality natively. This migration is an opportunity to simplify and modernize your processes.
How do you mitigate risk during the GP to Business Central migration?
Risk mitigation is built into every phase of the Aedista migration methodology. During analysis, we conduct a thorough fit-gap assessment to identify potential issues before they become problems. During execution, we perform multiple test migrations with full data reconciliation to validate accuracy. We run parallel systems during the transition period so users can verify data and processes in Business Central against GP. Comprehensive user acceptance testing (UAT) ensures all business processes work correctly before cutover. We develop detailed cutover plans with defined rollback procedures in case issues arise during go-live. Post-migration, we provide dedicated support and monitoring for the first 30 to 90 days to address any issues quickly.
Is it more cost-effective to stay on GP or migrate to Business Central?
While staying on GP avoids immediate migration costs, the long-term economics favor moving to Business Central. GP maintenance costs are rising as the talent pool shrinks and Microsoft reduces investment in the platform. Organizations on GP also bear the full cost of on-premises infrastructure including servers, backups, disaster recovery, and IT administration. Business Central's cloud deployment eliminates infrastructure costs and includes automatic updates, built-in security, and disaster recovery. The productivity gains from mobile access, AI-powered insights, and modern integrations with Microsoft 365 and Teams deliver measurable ROI. Most Aedista clients see a 32 percent reduction in operational costs within the first year of moving to Business Central, along with significantly improved employee productivity and data-driven decision making.
